Back to Basics

The minimalist look was popular for a few designers at this year's fashion week, particularly Derek Lam.

"He pulled his collection’s theme from a New Yorker review of the recent “Primary Atmospheres” exhibit at New York’s David Zwirner gallery, which focused on Sixties California minimalism... clean, crisp and controlled." Derek Lam RTW Spring 2011

I love the simplicity in each look and how versatile the pieces can be. Due to the lack of pattern and print, one can use almost any of these pieces as staple items in a wardrobe. The ability to dress them up or down with the right jewelry, coat or shoes is limitless.

Here are a few street style minimalists embracing their fashion basics:

Lastly, I am head over heels for this young designer. California native, Ashley Ann, launched her contemporary collection in 2008 and has been making major progress. She takes inspiration from Vintage Old Hollywood and transforms it into chic must-haves that would work in any fashion conscience young woman. With a focus on the modern woman and the current state of the economy, her philosophy is music to my ears. “I’m more focused on fit than trends. I don’t want to design disposable fashion.”
